About Sidy Maiga
Sidy Maiga is a master djembe artist from Mali whose work bridges traditional West African music with contemporary global collaborations. Since moving to the United States, he has become a leading figure in Rhode Island’s arts community, preserving traditional rhythms while collaborating across genres including Latin, blues, and Brazilian music.

A lifelong student of Mali’s master drummers, for nearly three decades, Sidy has taught and led programs in schools, hospitals, and community organizations. His work emphasizes cultural connection, healing, and community engagement through music.

Sidy is the founder and artistic director of Afrika Nyaga, Rhode Island’s West African Dance and Drum Festival, and Artistic Director of the RI Cultural Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting African culture through education, performance, and community programming.

His honors include the MacColl-Johnson Fellowship, two RISCA Folk Arts Fellowships, recognition as a PVDFest Grand Marshal, and his djembe is on display at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Sidy continues to perform internationally and build bridges between cultures through the arts.
