Heroes Read 190k Stories
Heroes Read 190k Stories is a hands-on art activity where Providence kids draw a one-panel comic using sheets featuring local neighborhood backdrops. Once finished, every child’s panel is strung together with the rest to create one massive, collective story about the city. It’s a simple, collaborative way for local youth to make art, practice visual storytelling, and help build a giant comic strip that celebrates Providence through their eyes.
Bio
A native of Providence’s Fox Point neighborhood, Shawn Andrews is the founder of Heroes Read, a nonprofit organization that uses popular arts to foster a love of reading and improve literacy outcomes for underprivileged children.
A lifelong comic book and anime fan, Andrews launched Heroes Read in 2024 under the belief that the medium does not determine the value of a story, using the organization’s programs to advocate for accessible literacy.
Andrews holds degrees from Northeastern University and Rhode Island College. He works in marketing and lives in Providence’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood.
