Montreal’s Betty Bonifassi is a true musical traveler, using her deep, booming voice to explore everything from jazz to electronic to American roots music. She is truly one of Canada’s great vocalists. Perhaps best known for providing the singing voices of the title characters in the Oscar-nominated animated feature “The Triplets of Belleville”, Betty has also gained acclaim for her work with fellow Quebecer DJ Champion and as one half of the electronic music duo Beast. She is one of the only artists from Quebec to have performed at both the Oscars and the Grammys. Her latest album, “Lomax”, finds Betty revisiting the turn-of-the-century slave songs recorded by famed ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax. Mixing modern electronics with early Delta roots and her signature contralto vocals, Lomax is Betty’s tour de force – like Tom Waits meeting Shirley Bassey at the Tomorrowland music festival.
