There is a renaissance in the backstreets of Providence, RI. Black people are creating, music, digital media, and written and spoken word performances born from struggle and resilience. The multimedia exhibition Beauty in the Backstreets presents an alternative view point that shattesrs the mainstream media’s messaginge that only ugliness exists in inner city Black communities. The unique narratives of the artists, born from experiences in the inner city, become grace notes between what hurts and what heals them; what is revealed is beautiful. Beauty in the Backstreets showcases Black people who create in isolation and make something when there are few resources, limited access, and countless barriers in front of them. Now that’s Black magic!
